An awe-inspiring presentation of acrobatics but needs some element of 'local' culture
Reviewer: David Hull (Waipahu, HI, USA) February 11, 2006

If you are looking for a Hawaii-themed "cirque" performance, you'd better look fast, as the four hula girls that appear at the beginning are the last you'll see of any content reference to Hawaii. The show is a respectable and sometimes awe-inspiring presentation of acrobatics, not unlike the Chinese acrobats who seem to visit the Hawaii Theater in town every Christmas season, but with more sound, light, costume design and with much more skill. The cast is hugely talented. The contortionist who appears early in the show is jaw-drop stunning and may very well be worth the price of the ticket alone. The rest of the show is hit or miss, with more hits than misses actually, but the whole never seems to be more than the sum of its parts.
This is disappointing,as I think this show has the potential to be huge success. Two things need to happen. The first is that some kind of narrative dramatic theme, ANYTHING, would help. Early in the show there seems to be a fuss made over a silver ball. Then it vanishes never to return. If there is such a theme, I didn't get it. As a result, what I saw was a cavalcade of unrelated acrobatic acts stitched together by interstitials of amusing pratfalls and buffoonery (which absolutely delighted my 7 year old). The second thing is that the show needs an infusion of some element of 'local' culture. I use this term in the broadest sense. It could be "Hawaiian". It could be "Asian Influenced". It could be in the music. In the background lighting. In the costuming. Go to school on our various collective cultural heritages and respectfully incorporate it. Make this show in some way a product of this place (Hawaii) and I think people will attend it in droves. |
