Dolphin Adventure and Swim
Come experience an unforgettable 4-hour journey with the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins! This is an adventure you will treasure for a lifetime.
Your journey begins from Honokohau Marina where the boat heads up the Coast line in search of one of the many pods of year round resident Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins. This journey takes you up the rugged Kona coastline where you will see some of the most beautiful scenery along the coastline which can only be viewed by boat. On this cruise you can expect to see white sandy beaches and crystal clear turquoise water, and be refreshed by a warm gentle sea breeze.
The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins are the smallest dolphin in Hawaii which reach about the size of an adult human and are very predictable in the areas along the coastline where they are regularly encountered. Some days the Dolphins are located outside a white sandy beach called Makalawena, sometimes in Kiholo Bay or even Ho'ona Bay, but one thing that remains the same is the magic and the mystique of the dolphins are worth the daily element of surprise.
Once a pod of dolphins has been located, you are then free to enter the water and snorkel. It is possible to have as many as 300 dolphins swimming around you! That is where the magic begins. Fun, easy and safe - this Dolphin Adventure is truly a memorable experience which will last a lifetime! |
The Boat: This adventure is launched off The Manta, a 2006 custom-built luxury dive boat, which was specifically built for comfort and style. The vessel is 40 feet long and 15 feet wide and very stable during cruise as well as at anchor. Powered by a quiet Cummins turbo diesel motor, the boat also features great amenities, such as a sun deck, shaded areas, an oversized swim platform for easy entry/exit, freshwater showers and camera tables. There's even a 20-inch flat screen TV to preview the video footage from your underwater adventure. Although The Manta is Coast Guard certified to carry up to 30 passengers plus the crew, they rarely let more than 15 passengers aboard at a time. They maintain a ratio of 1 crew member to 6 passengers in order to ensure high quality service, safety and space. |

The boat departs from Honokohau Harbor. Honokohau Harbor is 4 miles south of the Kona International Airport at Keahole.
From the Airport, take Highway 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy) to Honokohau. Look for signs for the Honokohau Bay Marina. At 4 miles from the airport, turn right (toward the ocean) onto Kealakehe Parkway. Go straight for 1500 feet and then take the first right. A small shopping center will be on your left. After the shopping center, take the first left. Go to the boat launch ramp and look for a 40 foot boat on a trailer. The boat will say Manta Ray Dives on the back. Please check in at the boat.
There are restrooms right next to the boat ramp. |

awesome trip & crew

Next time I visit the Big Island, I think I'll do this tour every other day.
KIDS OK: We had 2 girls less than 10yr old on our trip. They both loved it. One got scared & started to cry right before it was time to go into the water, but the crew (Peter) worked his magic. And before you knew it, she was excited about all the dolphins she saw.
HOW MANY DOLPHINS: So many. They swim around you, under you, turn around to look at you. The crew said that some days the dolphins stay put in one area, so snorkeling is super easy. But some days, they really haul a--. That was the case when we went. So, it was really excellent exercise as well trying to keep up w/ them.
SCARING THE DOLPHINS: The crew will tell you to not swim at the dolphins. This makes them swim away or dive down deep, souring it for others. 2 teenagers in our group did this several times. Please don't do the same. |

I cannot express enough in words what an outstanding experience this was! The men on board were knowledgeable & very friendly. Swimming with the dolphins was amazing - there were pods of 30 with us a good part of our trip and we were able to get up close and personal - I will do this adventure again with the same boat crew because it was THAT good! You will regret not going on this trip if you really want to be with dolphins because unlike a cruise were you see them from the boat this was so personal - I said to my sister - this was #2 aside from the birth of my child the most amazing experience of my life! |
