Early Riser Dolphin Quest Tour
Enjoy a fun-filled morning kayaking tour along Kona's spectacular coastline. This is a great opportunity to kayak in the cooler hours of the day and the waters are generally calmer then too.
This adventure starts in Keauhou Bay, the birthplace of Kamehameha the Great. After checking in, you'll receive your personal kayak (single or tandem). You'll be outfitted with life jackets, backrests, paddles, snorkel gear and bottled water. After that, you'll paddle into the calm and picturesque Keauhou Bay, where a group instruction will be conducted.
You'll then paddle along the coastline in search of dolphins. All along the way, you'll come across incredible natural scenery - tall sea cliffs, hidden coves, spectacular sea caves and lava tubes. The water here is so clear that you'll be able to see plenty of colorful tropical fish that live around the coral reef. Besides dolphins, you're very likely to see turtles and manta rays. And if you're here between December and April, the whale season in Hawaii, you might even see the majestic Pacific humpback whales frolicking in the offshore waters. This tour is eco-adventuring at its best! |
All the equipment you'll need is provided. You can get a single-seat kayak to ride alone, or choose the two-seat version to ride with a friend. You'll also get a complete range of safety gear. Plus, you'll be instructed on how to manage your boat before you leave. This guided adventure is led by Hawaii lifeguard certified, professional guides.
Just keep in mind that this tour takes place on Tuesdays only. Also, the group size is small to ensure high quality standards. But this also means that seats fill up quickly. So make your reservation early. |

Directions |
|
From Kailua-Kona: Drive south on Ali'i Drive (187) for about 6 miles to Keauhou Bay.
Although parking is available at the end of Kamehameha III Road, it is recommended that you park at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort (hotel). From the Sheraton, it is a 6 minute walk to the kayak launching point.
Directions to the Sheraton:
From Kona International Airport, turn right on to Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. Remain on "Queen K" for approximately 10 miles. As you head up a slight incline, get in the right lane, watch for the sign (and traffic light) for Kamehameha III Road where you'll turn right. Follow "Kam III Road" to the bottom, to Ali`i Drive, where you'll turn left at the light. Follow Ali`i Drive past Kona Country Club golf course & club house. Watch for a small green roadway sign on the right hand side indicating an upcoming right turn for Keauhou Bay where you'll turn on to Kaleiopapa Street. The entrance to the Sheraton Keauhou is just at the bottom of Kaleiopapa Street on your left at Ehukai Street.
Leaving the hotel, walk down the street toward the bay. At fork in the road, stay to the right side. At dead end of street, there is a parking lot with boat launch ramp. Look for the Ocean Safaris kayaks (brightly colored kayaks). There is a small shop where you need to check in. |

We really enjoyed the kayaking trip. We were given great instructions by Brent and he even threw in a few facts about the big Island! We were disappointed to not see many dolphins but we did enjoy lots of fish varieties as we snorkeled. Highly recommend!! |
