Start the day with a visit to the Iolani Palace grounds, which are home to one of the world's largest banyan trees. Here at the only royal palace in the entire United States, you'll learn more about Hawaiian history. See the King Kamehameha statue, the Hawaii State Capitol and other historic Honolulu sights. Learn about Honolulu trivia, history, myths, and more!
The next stop will be the Foster Botanical Garden. Your professional naturalist guide will explain the unique tropical plants, such as cacao, cinnamon, pepper and allspice trees and the famous Foster orchid collection. You'll also see the "Bo Tree,” which is grown from a cutting of the original tree planted in India 800 years ago by the first Dali Lama. |
At the Queen Liliuokalani Botanic Garden, you'll learn about endemic Hawaiian plant species on the grounds of a former Hawaiian monarch's home.
Later, you'll visit several hidden waterfalls near Honolulu such as Kapena Falls, where you'll see ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs (rock carvings) and learn the legend of Kaupe, the old guardian spirit that is said to protect travelers at this unique place.
On this fun tour, you'll also enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Diamond Head, Waikiki, Honolulu, and the southwest coast of Oahu as you'll travel up into the Ko'olau Mountains to Mount Tantalus. There'll be plenty of awesome photo opportunities. The tour at a glance: Walk time: 1 hour (0.5 mile round trip), no hiking required, accessible for all skill levels Rated: very easy |

Great Garden Tour!
Reviewer: Jean (Lihu'e, Kauai, USA) April 26, 2007

I will be the first to admit that I don't know an azalea from a zinnia nor had much interest in them but this tour changed my attitude completely. Our driver and guide was extremely knowledgeable and his enthusiasm was contagious. The tour also included visits to areas of Oahu that I've read about but didn't know their locations. This tour gave me a greater appreciation for the diversity of the island's topography and it's history. I definitely will be taking another of Big Kahuna's tours on my next visit. |
