Horseback Riding Adventure
Dahana Ranch is a Native Hawaiian family-owned and operated ranch, located in the verdant mountains on the Big Island at an elevation of 3,000 feet. Even though they offer a variety of activities and horseback rides, they are still a working ranch. They breed, raise and train American Quarter horses, train working cow horses and maintain a herd of about 140 cross-bred Brahma cattle for beef and rodeo bucking stock. They offer three horseback riding adventures, all tailored to the rider's skill level and interest.
The 1.5-Hour Ranch Lands Ride is ideal if you want to try out horseback riding. No experience is necessary. It's a great open range ride, which means that you won't have to follow a trail or ride nose to tail. You can spread out and experience true freedom. You'll cover about 4 miles of beautiful ranch lands with breathtaking views of Waipio Valley and the majestic Mauna Kea. You'll be accompanied by professional wranglers all the time. They will be happy to share their knowledge about paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) history, ranching and riding tips. |
The 2-Hour Advanced Ride is tailored for the experienced rider and allows for more freedom in the open country. It's for those who are spending at least 3 hours in the saddle on a weekly basis. This generally makes for a smaller group of riders. The ride will take you through Mauna Kea's lush, green foothills and you'll be surrounded by amazing scenery all along the way.
The 2.5-Hour Range Station Ride is a real cattle drive. Ever dreamed of being a cowboy? Now you can be a cowboy yourself as you help drive cattle through the countryside. Help move the herd of 100 Brahman crossbreds from one pasture through the ranch. You'll head out into the lush Waipio Valley on well-trained American Quarter horses. Challenge yourself as you hustle the cattle across the countryside.
It is recommended that you wear shoes and jeans for the ride. Also, don't forget to bring your camera. The views will amaze you! |
