Introductory Sailplane "Eagle" Flying Lesson
Sit up front in a high performance sailplane (a glider) and learn how to work the controls! Then take off and guide your sailplane on a series of and basic flying maneuvers.
An experienced FAA certified sailplane instructor will be with you all the way, from ground school through flight training. Try to "catch a thermal" as you do your best to "stay aloft" in this amazing high performance aircraft.
Your introductory flying lesson can be logged as flight time on a complementary logbook sheet. This is an excellent flight for anyone who has ever dreamed of flying a sailplane or glider.
A glider ride is one of the most peaceful and dreamlike experiences you can imagine. It is the feeling of flight without the sound of a noisy motor, the true majesty of natural flight, and something that no one will soon forget. Many people remark that it was the "highlight of my vacation.”
Hawaii’s steady tradewinds, the Waianae mountain range and consistent weather provide one of the world’s best soaring areas. World record soaring durations have been set on Oahu thanks to Hawaii’s ideal flying environment.
You can book your flight for up to 60 minutes. Each flight is an engine-less glide from the tow altitude down to the landing. The tow release altitude for rides range from 1,000 feet to 5,000 feet. Shorter rides are towed up to 1,000 to 3,000 feet and stay within a 5- to 10-mile radius of the airfield. The longer rides are taken out toward the middle of the island (15-20 miles from the airfield) and are towed up to a 3,000- or 5,000-foot altitude. |
The higher the flight, the longer the ride, and the more you will see. On clear days you can see 80-90% of the island from 5,000 feet above the ground.
The sailplane operation is located at Dilllingham Airfield on the North Shore of Oahu about a one hour drive from Waikiki. The 9000-foot runway is directly in front of the beautiful beach 2000 feet away from the beautiful Waianae Mountains.
There's a free hotel pick-up shuttle running every day from most Waikiki hotels including the Kahala Mandarin Hotel. Pickup times start at 9:00 am and returning back to the hotel later that afternoon. |
