The Island Breeze Luau is held under the stars on the historic grounds of Kamehameha the Great's former estate, now the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel. The hotel is located right on the beach of Kailua Bay, within walking distance of many visitor accommodations in Kailua Kona.

Included in this night of fun are: a lei greeting, picture taking, open bar, arts and crafts, and the imu (traditional underground oven) ceremony, which are all a part of the welcome and introduction to your Island Breeze ohana (family). Watch and learn some of the traditional arts and crafts - weave a coconut frond, learn how to open a coconut, take a hula lesson, have an artist draw a Polynesian tattoo, and take the time to meet and talk to some of the performers you will watch later in the evening.

The Open Bar is open from 5:30 to 7:30 to serve you complimentary drinks, including mai tai's, wine, beer, and sodas. Additionally there are two self-serve bars in the shape of a boat that provide mai tai's and non-alcoholic fruit punch.

The festivities begin with the arrival of the Royal Court, representing the personages of King Kamehameha I and his retainers. A special greeting by the Court Conch Herald and Court Chanter announces their arrival at Kamakahonu Bay aboard an outrigger canoe. Follow this procession from the activities area into the Royal Grounds, where the elaborate luau buffet has been set up. Enjoy over 20 local style dishes, including Kalua Pua'a (the succulent pork that just came out of the underground oven), Lau Lau (meat wrapped in a taro leaf and steamed), poi (an ancient Hawaiian staple food made from taro) and haupia (coconut pudding) that will give you a true taste of the Islands. While you are enjoying your dinner, relax with the live musical accompaniment on stage playing the tunes of the islands.

The finale of the evening is the spectacular Island Breeze Polynesian Revue. This Island Breeze show is filled with excitement, aloha and ohana (family). From the Fijian and Maori dances of war to the gracefulness of Hawaiian hula, you and your family will experience an unforgettable evening of culture and dance. The daring Samoan Fire knife dancer highlights the evening with an astonishing demonstration of bravery and skill!

Family luau

My husband and I took our 4 daughter to Hawaii to scratch it off our bucket list.LOL We had been there 25 yrs ago so hence the time to return our girls 19, 15, 13 ,11 who wanted badly to go to a luau. We went to Germaines on the last visit. It was OK. As most people will tell you luau food is really not that great. But at Island Breeze WOW the food was terrific. The girls even went back for seconds. That almost never happens. The show was out of this world. We paid extra for priority seating and it was worth every penny. And trust me doing anything with a family of 6 is not inexpensive. If you are torn between luaus don't hesitate.

The food selection was great and tasted wonderful. The mai tais were excellent as well. The variety of activities allowed you to do whatever you wanted to do most. We thought the hula lessons, palm fish making, etc were on a rotation but it turns out you can really only do one of the above. It would have been nice to see them all but I understand there is not enough time to do it all. It was nice that the coconut opening lesson and the presentation of the imu were at a different times than anything else so you could really enjoy those. Overall, we had a pretty good time.

The Luau was fun from start to finish. We loved our family photo. Individuals were recognized for special events-nice. One of our group of ten danced on stage-fun. The kids got tattoos-fun for them. The history of the bar-b-qued pig was interesting. The Mai Tais, other beverages, and meal were delicious- everyone found something, even our picky eaters. The entertainers were fabulous! They were sincerely sensational. Our entire group enjoyed the music, dance, song, rhythm, and fire dance were impressive. We all appreciated the acknowledgment of our military as well, it was a well-deserved tribute. And to remember the show, we purchased the CD. thanks much.

The setting was beautiful. We chose to get the preferred seating so we were seated upfront and didn't have to wait in line for the buffet. The food was excellent. The show was very entertaining and we loved the MC (very funny). The only problem we had with the show that spoiled it was there were 2 non Asian/Polynesian girls in the show (out of 4 girls). I don't mean to discriminate but they stood out. The one girl played a Polynesian princess in a green costume and it looked like she should have done an Irish step dance instead.

We've been to the islands several times and always include a luau since our daughters love the hula dancing and we enjoy the food. This luau is definitely better than most. With the ceremonial royal island as a backdrop, and a decent view of the sunset, the location is not bad, but we have been to better spots. This luau did have good food, but was most outstanding for excellent entertainers -the singing, dancing, choreography, pre-luau games and imu ceremony along with procession of royalty in full costume were all great. They live up to their reputation as the best luau on the big island.

A luau night on the Big Island

Getting the upgrade was definitely worth it, although I must admit that my friend and I were a little disappointed that the hula demo and frond weaving were out in the common area and not really available to VIP members (unless we wanted to miss the coconut demo and tattoos). Also, there's got to be a better way to handle the opening of the roasting pit and the arrival of the royal court--most people didn't get to see a thing!

The food was incredible, the setting and atmosphere lovely, and the entertainment, overall, absolutely fantastic. Again, my only quibble was with the hula performance--the costumes, were, quite honestly, off for this particular dance, and it almost seemed to be performed as an afterthought when it should have been the climax of the show! The skill of the dancers was undeniable, but that last dance needs improvement to truly represent the Big Island.

The gentleman selling the leis at the entrance to the luau was very nice; however, his pitch was deceptive. We'd read that shell leis will be provided for the luau, but he definitely gave the impression that the flower and nut/bead leis he was offering were it--you buy one or you're out of luck. I think that it should definitely, definitely be made much clearer that these leis are IN ADDITION to the shell leis provided by the luau.

This luau was great since it felt like I was back home at a large family barbecue. Very friendly and accommodating staff. About 300 in attendance which made it where there was not a bad seat to see the luau. Food was great and plenty of it. Bar stayed opened full two hours and we had more than enough to drink. Price paid for the meal, drinks, and entertainment was the best bargain of all. Would go back again.

For those staying in the Kona area, I can easily recommend the Island Breeze Luau. They easily accommodated our family of four, including a 2 year old and 4 year old. The food was good, the dancing superb, and the location was top notch.
Would definitely recommend to any friend who traveled to the Big Island.

I was in grade school when Hawaii became a state.I can remember being a real Hawaii nut for a long time. So finally getting to attend a real luau and actually be in Hawaii was a dream come true .My husband and I were so impressed by our first luau experience with Island Breeze Beachfront Luau. Several friends had recommended it and we will do so with friends in the future. We also met some locals that told us this is the luau that they take family and friends to when they visit from the mainland.

The food was fun, the mai tai canoe was clever. The company at our table was a delight. We were really impressed with the entertainment. My thought before hand was that the performers would just be going through the motions since they do so many shows. But they were very, very professional and had fun doing the show. The aloha spirit!!! One problem was my digital camera wasn't set for night photos. Lots of blurs. So to solve this I purchased a dvd to have memories to take back to cold Wisconsin!! Mahalo and Aloha!!!!

The size of the luau (and it was sold out) was smaller and more intimate than the ones on Ohau and Kauai. It felt just like a family celebration. The history of the islands presented during the show was very interesting.

My husband and I enjoyed ourselves... it would have been nice if they had included labels so we could identify some of the Hawaiian dishes that were unknown to us. The entertainment was fun as was the island crafts before the main event... I've heard that the luaus on Maui or Oahu are much better. I would try it again when we visit one of those two islands in the future.

An evening of fun - Hawaiian style!

Reviewer: Anne Summers
(Little Rock, Arkansas, USA)
August 2, 2006
My family and I attended this luau, and it was a great time for all of us. When we got there, we discovered what a beautiful place it is - right on the water, with tall palm trees all around and Mauna Loa Volcano as the backdrop! This spot also happens to be the location of the first capital of Hawaii, back when all the islands were first united by King Kamehameha. There are historical markers all about that tell some really interesting facts and history of the place.

We participated in making fish out of coconut fronds, learned the right way to open a coconut, and had a hula lesson. There was so much to see and do that first hour, so I would recommend to anyone to GO EARLY so you don’t miss anything! Most of the evening they also had an open bar, which was nice because we didn’t need to hassle with money or tickets, and they even had a self-serve mai tai bar that was made out of a boat. Next we had a wonderful meal, which was served buffet style and was full of exotic and delicious looking food. My favorite was a salad made with purple seaweed. My husband tried a little of everything and liked it all. My son, who is a picky eater, found so much to eat that he didn’t even have room for dessert. That was a first! All in all, the food was really delicious.

Next came the show. They presented dances from all over Polynesia – Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, Fiji, and Samoa. First the Tahitian dancers came out – they really got everyone’s attention with their fast hip shaking dancing. We were riveted in our seats watching the fascinating dances from all these islands, esp the fire knife dance that came at the very end.
