Kalaupapa Ultimate Adventure Mule Ride
Experience the "Ultimate Scenic Adventure" traversing the old Hawaiian Kalaupapa Trail down 26 Switchbacks and a little less then 1,800 feet elevation to the Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai. You will be riding down one of the most spectacular as well as the highest sea cliffs in the world. The boundless beauty you will experience as you traverse down the 2.9 mile trail leaves most folks absolutely speechless.
The Molokai Mule Ride is a unique full day adventure down into the isolated Kalaupapa peninsula on the island's north side. From the Kalaupapa Lookout, the path leads down a 1,800-foot cliff to the settlement below. The peninsula can only be reached by foot or mule.
Once you reach the valley floor, you will be picked up for a guided bus tour of the settlement. Enjoy a picnic-style lunch (included with the tour) at Judd Park on the scenic Kalawao side, overlooking sea cliffs and waterfalls, dramatic ocean rock formations and crashing surf.
Kalaupapa was a leprosy settlement in the late 19th century, when the sickness broke out in the Hawaiian Islands. Kalaupapa was then an inhospitable place. There was no housing and no food. Only when the Belgian Padre Damien de Veuster arrived and cared for the sick, Kalaupapa became a better and more humane place to be. They built shacks to live in and food was shipped from the neighboring island of Oahu. At times, Kalaupapa housed more then 1,000 inhabitants. After helping the sick for 16 years, Padre Damien de Veuster died himself of leprosy in 1889. Today, about 200 people live at Kalaupapa. |
Kalaupapa National Historical Park, established in 1980, contains the physical setting for these stories. Within its boundaries are the historic Hansen's disease settlements of Kalaupapa and Kalawao. The community of Kalaupapa, on the leeward side of Kalaupapa Peninsula, is still home for many surviving Hansen's disease patients, whose memories and experiences are cherished values. In Kalawao on the windward side of the peninsula are the churches of Siloama, established in 1866, and Saint Philomena, associated with the work of Father Damien (Joseph De Veuster). |
