Keauhou Sea Cave Kayak Tour

Enjoy a fun-filled day in a kayak out on the ocean and experience the way the Hawaiians traveled in the old days. The adventure starts in Keauhou Bay, the birthplace of Kamehameha the Great. After checking in, you'll receive your personal kayak (single or tandem). You'll be outfitted with life jackets, backrests, paddles, snorkel gear and bottled water. After that, you'll paddle into the calm and picturesque Keauhou Bay, where a group instruction will be conducted.

From there, you'll head south along the cliffs toward Kuamoo Bay. Along the way, you're likely to see dolphins, manta rays and turtles frolicking in the crystal clear water. There is also interesting natural scenery to marvel at, such as arches and blow holes along the cliffs. In Kuamoo Bay, you'll head for a sea cave that often allows kayakers to enter and explore its pink walls and aqua blue waters.

Afterwards, you'll follow the coastline and paddle over coral gardens and underwater lava tubes until you arrive at the next cave, which is usually calm and cool. It's a dry lava tube above a cave that extends deep into the earth (bring a flashlight if you want to go in). Next up is another cave, which sits in a protected cove. Here, you'll drop anchor and have a chance to snorkel over the coral reefs and explore the underwater wonders. There's an abundance of colorful tropical fish. Look close and you might see octopus, uhu (parrotfish), butterflies, yellow tang, wrasse or even a crown of thorns.

Later, you'll climb up to a nice vantage point above the cove where you'll enjoy cold drinks and snacks. If you dare, you can jump off the 12- to 25-foot cliffs into the water below. No worries. The water here is deep and safe. Many people, even though scared in the beginning, jump off and end up doing the jump many times. Or walk over to the tide pools to watch the eels hunting A'ama crabs. After an hour-long refreshing break at this great spot, you'll paddle back to Keauhou Bay. You'll be back around lunchtime. This tour is eco-adventuring at its best!

This tour includes all the equipment you'll need. You can get a single-seat kayak to ride alone, or choose the two-seat version to ride with a friend. Special "triacks" (3 person kayaks) are also available for couples with young children. You'll also get a complete range of safety gear. Plus, you'll be instructed on how to manage your boat before you leave. This guided adventure is led by CPR and first aid certified professional guides.

Driving Directions

Thrifty Rent-A-Car System, Inc.
From Kailua-Kona: Drive south on Ali'i Drive (187) for about 6 miles to Keauhou Bay.

Although parking is available at the end of Kamehameha III Road, it is recommended that you park at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort (hotel). Free parking is available in their public parking lot (no validation needed). From the Sheraton, it is a 6 minute walk to the kayak launching point.

Directions to the Sheraton:

From Kona International Airport, turn right on to Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. Remain on "Queen K" for approximately 10 miles. As you head up a slight incline, get in the right lane, watch for the sign (and traffic light) for Kamehameha III Road where you'll turn right. Follow "Kam III Road" to the bottom, to Ali`i Drive, where you'll turn left at the light. Follow Ali`i Drive past Kona Country Club golf course & club house. Watch for a small green roadway sign on the right hand side indicating an upcoming right turn for Keauhou Bay where you'll turn on to Kaleiopapa Street. The entrance to the Sheraton Keauhou is just at the bottom of Kaleiopapa Street on your left at Ehukai Street.

Leaving the hotel, walk down the street toward the bay. At fork in the road, stay to the right side. At dead end of street, there is a parking lot with boat launch ramp. Look for the Ocean Safaris kayaks (brightly colored kayaks). There is a small shop where you need to check in.

Very friendly staff. Small groups were good and they very patient waiting for all kayaks of all abilities.

Great to take a few breaks to admire the scenery, especially a short snorkel break and snacktime where we could jump from a 15ft rock.

We had fun especially right at the start when we got into the kayak. We capsized in about 20 inches of water. Embarrassing but we got it over with then.

The sea cave was interesting, to see how much erosion had happened. It was a shame that we couldn't kayak through the cave (as there is no exit).

In summary, it was a great trip and our first kayak. Highly recommend it, we had a triak with our son in the middle who chose not to paddle but got to enjoy a free ride.

My family and I had a wonderful time. Our 8 and 4 year old enjoyed paddling and just sitting. The guides were very friendly and helpful. We kayaked quite a distance and enjoyed some snorkeling and diving from a 30ft cliff. We actually recommended this tour to a family that was at Kona at the same time and they loved it. I would highly recommend this tour, to anyone who enjoys kayaking in the clean blue ocean of Kona. It is affordable and quite enjoyable. All in all, it was a fantastic tour!!

The sea cave kayak tour was a ton of fun with a mixture of light physical activity, some safe thrills in the sea caves, and cliff-jumping for those of us who needed more thrills! Nice variety of activities. The guides are fun, friendly, and there for protection. Plus, snacks were provided! :)

There are lots of things to do in Hawaii, and my wife and I enjoyed our trip on the kayak. Our friend with us (over 55 years old) had to show his kid in himself and jump off the cliff. It was entertaining. Our guides did an excellent job. You will enjoy the morning, aloha!

Simply loved the sea kayak adventure. Sea cave was fun and the snorkeling was awesome. Excellent guides provided a fun, safe experience. Cliff diving opportunity was a blast, even for an old man. Yummy snacks were served during the break. The live eel in the tidepool made the trip even more unforgettable.

I didn't know what to expect when I initially booked this activity. My boyfriend loves the water. I, on the other hand, am terrified of the water. But no fear because the guides at Keauhou Sea Cave Kayak Tour took good care of me. One of the guides floated me on shore and back to the kayak.I was really only expecting to sit in the kayak while the others ventured to the shore.

The guides were great, very friendly and knowledgeable. And the experience was one of a kind. Not only did we learn to kayak but we got to see a part of the Big Island you can't see from shore and we learned a lot of history about the island. It was such an amazing adventure. Thank you.
