Atlantis Submarine Expedition & Whale Watch Cruise
The biggest attraction on Maui in winter is the whales. They are truly amazing creatures. Every year in December, they swim the thousands of miles from Alaska to Hawaii to mate and raise their young in Hawaii's warm waters. Now you can combine a great whale watching cruise with another great thing to do on the "Valley Isle" - an excursion to the part of Maui that most people never get to see! Come aboard the Atlantis, a real passenger submarine, for a journey 130 feet (40 m) below sea level. Just keep in mind that this combo tour operates during the whale migration period only.
Atlantis submarines are the world's first and most technologically advanced passenger submarines. You will journey into a spectacular blue world more than 130 feet below the surface in spacious air-conditioned comfort. You'll see the same spectacular underwater world that scuba divers see, but without having to get wet, which makes this also a great activity for the whole family (children need to be at least 3 feet tall).
To enhance its sub tour experience and help improve the marine environment, Atlantis embarked on creating an artificial reef in December 2005 by sinking the Carthaginian replica whaling ship. Artificial reefs have a proven track record of ecological benefits. The sunken Carthaginian, which needed major repairs and would have been scuttled at sea otherwise, is anchored to a sandy bottom at a depth of 95 feet (29 m) that is devoid of coral reef. The resulting artificial reef will develop into a self-sustaining habitat for indigenous fish, coral and other marine life. So come aboard the Atlantis to witness the new resting home of the Carthaginian.
All Atlantis submarines are U.S. Coast Guard approved and equipped with stabilizers for a smooth, enjoyable ride. They are also air-conditioned and fully pressurized so that everyone will feel perfectly comfortable during the dive. And the best thing is that everyone gets the best seat in the house because all seats are front-row seats. Each is positioned in front of a large view port so that you'll get a clear and unobstructed view of the underwater world. Audio headset narrations in Japanese are available. |
For the submarine dive, you'll first board the Holokai, the shuttle vessel, which awaits you in Lahaina Harbor. After a short boat ride to the dive site, you'll be treated to the sight of your submarine surfacing from the deep, ready to take you on board! A short and safe walking plank is extended for you to board the submarine from the boat. After your submarine dive, the shuttle vessel will take you back to land.
For the whale watching cruise, you will again depart from Lahaina Harbor. You will board a 49 ft. Explorer "Super Raft" (Scarib Racing Hull). This fast boat get you to the whale watching areas fast for longer viewing opportunities, which is important particularly in the early and late part of the season when the whale populations are further offshore. Every seat is a front row seat with great 360 degree viewing. A trained onboard naturalist will provide insightful commentary on these magnificent animals. There is no better setting than Maui to see the migrating humpback whales as they "vacation" in the islands during winter. So if you haven't been to the bottom of the ocean before and would also love to view whales up close, this combo tour is a must do! |
