Come enjoy a sumptuous Polynesian feast under the stars where you will find the Big Island's finest cuisine coupled with the most spectacular Polynesian entertainment, all in the place where ancient kings once gathered and dined!

Gathering of Kings Luau

Famous Gathering of Kings Luau is a Polynesian feast like no other. Combining the best of traditional Pacific Rim gastronomy and a grand entertaining tale of exploration and discovery that culminates in the settling of the Hawaiian Islands, The Gathering of Kings is an evening you will never forget.

The food is expertly prepared by the award-winning chef of the Fairmont Orchid to reflect the culinary delights of several distinct Polynesian countries. Travel to the islands of Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand and Tahiti as you taste the culinary treasures that are the pride of Polynesia. From Coconut Vanilla Prawns and Green Papaya Salad to Lamb Ragout and Pork Curry with Banana, this is an authentic blending of Polynesian fare. The fabulous desserts, such as Kiwi Fruit Tart and coconut cake, will round off your meal with a satisfying smile.

Situated on 32 beautiful acres of oceanfront property on the pristine Kohala Coast, the grounds of the Fairmont Orchid indulge the senses with romantic charm and magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and five mountains, including the daunting volcano Mauna Kea. Kalahuipua'a literally means "gathering place for chiefs" - this was the site where in ancient days kings would gather together and feast. Centered around four fishponds, the area was known for its abundance of fish that were served to the ali'i (chiefs). Runners transported fish wrapped in wet limu (seaweed), over long distances, still fresh and wiggling to the chief's hale (house). Adjacent to this site was the trail that was used to transport Hawaii's royalty from 1200 - 1700 AD.

Thousands of petroglyphs surround this area depicting stories of how the ancient chiefs celebrated "makahiki" (a season of harvest and a time of peace that took place between September and March), as well as the many journeys that went to and from the southern isles of Polynesia. It is the perfect setting for your stunning evening under the stars!

A journey through the Pacific you will never forget...

After you have taken in the beautiful view and a delectable meal, it will be time to sit back and enjoy the authentic Polynesian entertainment. Using a fusion of both traditional Polynesian and modern dance choreography, the dancers retell the story of the journey of the Polynesians who settled the Pacific. Beginning in a time when the vast, open ocean was yet unchartered, discover how brave people whose descendants would be called Polynesians, carved a path through this ocean thoroughfare using only the currents, sea birds, seaweeds, cloud formations and stars for navigation. Displayed in its fullness is the mana (power) of the alii (chiefs) and how each would be forever linked to the great star that guided them across the vast ocean... Hokule'a, the "Star of Gladness".

The "Gathering of the Kings" calls to all mankind, to follow and fulfill their destiny, to bring peace and unity to all.

We had been to a previous luau which was very good. This one, however, was over the top. The food and arrangement of same was superb and the entertainment was outstanding. This is a luau anyone visiting Hawaii MUST see. The food and history of the various islands along with entertainment sharing this with the attendee is definitely worth the time and money. I cannot say enough good things about this luau - you gotta see if for yourself!
