Let Germaine's "take you back 100 years" as they treat you to exotic cocktails, a sumptuous all-you-can-eat feast, a stunning Polynesian Revue, and much more. Enjoy a fun-filled evening that will bring Hawaii home to your heart.

Germaine's Luau

The fun and enjoyment of an evening at Germaine's Luau begins long before you sit down to feast on a delicious authentic Hawaiian meal. From the minute you step on to the chartered luxury motor coach that will carry you to the ocean side luau, it's easy to see that this is no ordinary experience.

Take in the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Islands.

The pleasant and entertaining ride from Waikiki to Oahu's sunny west shore is a chance for one of Germaine's friendly hosts to greet guests and prepare them for the evening ahead. Guests who board the bus as strangers will feel like members of Germaine's Ohana, or extended family, by the time they step off. Upon arrival at Germaine's, you are welcomed with a traditional shell lei and greeted by the majestic beauty of a luau on a tropical Pacific Ocean beach.

An impressive ceremonial event at Germaine's Luau is the opening of the imu (underground oven). This is the traditional rock-filled oven where the Kalua Pig is placed early in the day and gently roasted to succulent perfection. Gather to watch the pig being removed from the oven while the method and traditions of imu cooking are detailed.

After exploring the beautiful Luau grounds and taking in the many intriguing activities, get set to experience some great food - island style! Help yourself to the multi-course Hawaiian Buffet ...a combination of traditional island favorites and continental (traditional American) fare. Tempt your taste buds with such exotic specialties as Lomilomi Salmon and Kalua Pig, Poi (taro) and Mahimahi (fish), and be sure to save room for some tasty dessert items to round out your culinary experience. Also, a vegetarian option of stir-fried vegetables and tofu is available upon request (more vegetarian items are available at the buffet).

To quench your thirst, there is everything from fruit punch to Germaine's special tropical drinks like the "Mai Tai" and the "Blue Hawaii". Complimentary unlimited soft drinks, hot coffee and hot tea are provided for your refreshment throughout the evening. Every adult will receive 3 complimentary alcoholic beverage coupons. A variety of tropical, blended and specialty beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are also available at the cash bar.

Germaine's boasts an open seating arrangement that allows you to sit where you choose during the dinner and the show. You may enjoy sitting at the traditional low luau tables fronting the stage where you can enjoy your meal on the woven mats, just as the ancient Hawaiians did. It's the perfect place to see both the pre-show entertainment, and later Germaine's spectacular Polynesian Revue.

Spectacular entertainment delivered to you at the ocean's edge, under the stars and palm trees.

After dinner guests are treated to a colorful showcase of authentic song and dance from many Pacific Island nations, including Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand. It provides guests with a cultural tour of the South Pacific, featuring performances ranging from fierce ceremonial war dances to fondly remembered Hawaiian love ballads and a pulse pounding Samoan Fire-Knife Dance.

Enjoy the sense of belonging, where you are part of the celebration.

One of the most important aspects of the luau is the welcoming spirit and "aloha" shared by all. Early in the show, all the women are invited up on stage for a fun hula lesson. The men then have a chance to show off their moves, Tahitian style! Audience participation is encouraged throughout the entire evening, and you are invited to be part of the fun!

Experience an authentic Hawaiian Luau.

The special quality of Germaine's Luau reflects the warm soul, genuine hospitality and rich culture of the Hawaiian people. The true spirit of Aloha is the defining element of the Germaine's Luau experience. The luau provides guests a first hand experience with the soul and essence of a traditional Polynesian family. Share the passion, the culture and the love of the islands in an unforgettable evening.

This was the second time we visited Hawaii. Ten years ago we visited Oahu and Maui and went to a luau on Maui (The Old Lahaina Luau). We really enjoyed the intimacy of that one - it wasn't nearly as large as Germaine's. The luau at Germaine's was difficult to see the show because of people standing in the way and walking in front of our table. The food was good especially the roasted pig and the pineapple on the table! The bus ride and the host (Alika) was great. He made the trip enjoyable and fun. If we go again, we will go to Maui and go to a smaller, more intimate setting for a luau.

Honest review - what to expect when you go

Reviewer: Biz

We wanted to experience a Hawaiian Luau on our vacation. Wasn't quite sure what to expect. If you're interested, here's what you can expect at Germaine’s:

You should reserve at least one day in advance since it fills up fast. Price includes the food, drinks, show, and transportation to and from the hotel. You get three drink tickets for alcoholic drinks. You can buy more with cash if you like. Soda and Iced tea were free.

They will mention a “secret” on the bus there that if you buy a souvenir 16oz glass in the gift shop ($8), you will get 16oz drinks rather than the 8oz drinks they serve normally. Domestic beer is included, but wine costs extra. Mai Tai’s were pretty good.

The actual luau area is located on the west end of Oahu. It takes approx 45-60 minutes to get there from Honolulu with traffic. The return trip is around 30 minutes. You’ll depart in the 4:00 hour and return around the 10:00 hour.

The dining / show / drink area consists of the stage, then three rows of picnic tables, then the bar in the rear. Note that the front row of tables closest to the stage is very low. You essentially sit on the ground (sand with beach mats).

Once everyone has a drink, they move you from the dining / show / bar to the area where they’ve buried a pig in the ground and cooked it. They go through the ritual of uncovering it, shaking the meat off the bone, then everyone can take pictures. Once the ritual is done, everyone moves back to the dining / show / bar area.

The tables are large picnic tables that hold about a dozen people comfortably. They have a band playing music and invite tables one or two at a time to the buffet to feed. Note they start from the outside in, so if you’re seated in the middle of the crowd (best view of the show) you eat last. The delay is approx 20 minutes as they work their way from tables on the edge to the middle.

Speaking of seating, if you want to take photos, you should sit up close. The lighting is dim so your photos will not come out well (flash only works for about 10 feet) if you sit toward the rear.

When it’s your turn to go up for the buffet, they give you a large paper plate to put your food on. Once all people have eaten, you can return to the buffet, where they give you a regular size paper plate, for as many refills as you want (fresh plate each time of course).

Buffet consists of deep-fried chicken and deep-fried fish as well as a beef with gravy and the roasted pig. In addition they had garden salad, potato salad, and coleslaw. They have two dressings and one tartar sauce. Lots of people put tartar sauce on their salad since they think it’s a third dressing!

Also the ads said they have “Lomi Salmon”. We looked for forward to a piece of salmon but as it turns out, it’s essentially a salsa made with small pieces of salmon. Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t what we thought it would be. They had their version of “chicken noodle soup” which was comprised of those Chinese clear noodles in chicken broth.

Deserts were standard large sheet cakes (chocolate and vanilla flavors) as well as some traditional coconut pudding. By the way, coconut pudding is a natural laxative so don’t eat too much.

The show was pretty good. The dancers were nice looking and costumes were very nice and bright. The “flaming knife” dancer was amazing.

This Luau was one of the most fun things we did on our wonderful trip to the Hawaiian Islands. A friend at work who has visited the Islands many times recommended Germaines and she was right on! Our adventure started on the bus from Waikiki with Georgie as our escort. As a native from the Islands she was full of information and history. Spoke the language beautifully and was a hoot to boot! She told some great stories, and encouraged us to get to know one another. We arrived at the Luau had our picture taken -which now is a treasured souvenir- and got 'Leied'.

The food was delicious, the Mai Tais strong. The show was great and kept us laughing throughout. The Hawaiian girls doing the Hula were wonderful. They are so graceful and feminine, the beauty of it brought tears to my eyes. I even went up on stage to try my hand at it. Back on the bus Georgie surprised me with a beautiful Plumeria Lei because we were celebrating our anniversary. Germaines Luau thank you for some great memories!

Germaine's Luau was the best part of my trip to Honolulu. It was a lot of fun. During the bus ride to the luau the hostess told us a little about what to expect. The hostess made the bus ride to and from the luau a lot of also, and made us laugh too. The luau was a lot of fun and the show was great along with many laughs. They also had members of the audience participate in a couple parts of the show.

Living in a modern us city, i understand that the freeway will be a mess during 4p-7p on weekdays. The tour guide just needs to remind other guests the H1 will have traffic when going from Waikiki to the luau location. It would be nice to get more incite on island landmarks or deals. The MC had a great dj voice thou. Dancers and fire work is the Event.

It was a fun time. I'm glad we took the bus - the ride there and back was so much fun! It was a little awkward at first to be told to meet the stranger next to us, but it turned out to be a good time. I liked the 2 separate bars. The show was fun, especially the audience participation parts. The food was good - I was glad that there were traditional American foods along with the local fare. Overall it was a very good time.

This was our first time to attend a Luau and our first trip back to the islands in 45 years.

The bus ride to Ewa Beach and back was outstanding. Our host was a great entertainer all the way there and back, even with a bus load of noisy and rowdy folks!

The way our host introduced each of us to each other and then remembered our names like he had known us for years was really impressive.

The setting for the luau was beautiful. The food was good and the entertainment was first rate.

Mahalo for a wonderful evening.

We were very happy to be a part of this activity. The luau was EXCELLENT!!! FANTASTIC. The show was very entertaining, we liked the food and the most interesting and happy moment we had was with Travis (our Bus Guide) and Ayumi (Captain/Driver) - Bus #6. We had a lot of fun on our way to the luau and back to our Hotel! These two deserve applause. They did a great job. We believe this is the most important key to the luau. Continuous entertainment!!!. We are very positive to recommend your activity to our family and friends. Keep up the good work. See you again next year.

Germaine's bus picked us up near our Hotel. The ride was memorable and our host, Ken and driver were fun eventhough we were in a traffic jam. The show was great and the crowd interaction was memorable. The food was plentiful and there was a good selection for all. All of the hosts made you feel at home and truly gave all the Aloha experience. This Luau is a good one for the money and was suggested in a book on Hawaii.

Germaine’s Luau is located outside of Honolulu, so a bus came to pick us from our hotel to drive us to the luau. It was about a 40 - 50 minute ride from Waikiki. The bus was comfortable and there was a tour guide who entertained us during all the way to the luau. She was funny, friendly and knowledgeable about Hawaii.

When we arrived at the luau we were greeted with shell leis and someone took a picture of us together with a native Hawaiian guy and hula dancer. We though the pictures will be free to pick but at the end of the eveing we realized we had to pay an extra fee for them, so we did not buy them because we thought the fee was too high for a picture. However we took plenty of pictures ourselves after we arrived because we had at about 30 minutes before the luau started.

The luau began with the Imu show (this is a ceremony with a pig where the ancient Hawaiian honor the pig of the ancient Gods). Then we were invited to the luau buffet where we could taste the pig, along with many more dishes, such as fried chicken, lomi lomi salmon, rice, chicken long rice, poi (not my favorite) and even more. The food was good overall. The drinks too. But best of all was the night show. We saw dances from Tahiti, Hawaii and Samoa. The dancers were very talented and funny. I will never forget these Tahitian rhythms and dances where the girls move their hips so fast that you can get dizzy only by watching it!
