Heavenly Hana Tour
No visit to Maui is complete without having seen Hana, a quaint little town on the island's east shore. To get there, you'll have to drive the famous Hana Highway, 52 serpentine miles that don't sound far, but wait until you are actually driving that road. It winds around 600 curves and goes over 54 one-lane bridges. It's a good idea to let someone else do the driving so you can sit back and enjoy the amazing landscape, which simply must be seen to be believed.
You'll see many spectacular waterfalls cascading down lush green mountains into crystal clear ponds. On one side of the road, you'll see the rainforest, where fruit trees dangle their offerings - mango, guava, banana, and the like. On the other side is the ocean and many secluded coves and nice beaches, including one black sand beach. |
Once you reach Hana, you'll have time to look around and enjoy its laid-back atmosphere. The town's social centers are the baseball field and the two churches, where on Saturday mornings the hymns ring out in the old Hawaiian language and visitors are greeted with a flower lei.
You'll also be amazed at Hana's beaches, which are amazingly different. They come in brushed golden color, pure white and jet black. One beach is even the color of crushed garnet and another of green olivine.
Hana is a place where the old tradition is alive and aloha is a way of life. Strangers are welcomed with an open heart and hospitality is as prevalent as nature. |
