From no other place in the world can you see a more spectacular sunrise than at the summit of Haleakala. Even Mark Twain described it as " the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed".

Sunrise Special Bike Tour Down Haleakala

The Sunrise Special leaves Haiku two hours before sunrise, arriving at Haleakala's 10,023' summit about an hour before sunrise. A narrated tour of Haleakala Nation Park, which includes the summit, crater, and visitor center, will commence after the sun has risen.

Watch the sun come up over the volcanic crater, a truly spectacular sight. Mark Twain described sunrise at the summit of Haleakala as "...the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed". Some call it the eighth wonder of the world, others call it a "power center". It is all that and more.

At once forbidding and compelling, Haleakala National Park is Maui's main natural attraction. Just going up the mountain is quite an experience, let alone biking down! No where else can you climb from sea level to 10,023' in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000' deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 21 miles in circumference. Big enough to contain Manhattan!

After your van tour of the Park, you will stage at 6500', where you begin your self-guided descent on your bike, back down to the store. It is your day on the mountain; you are free to go at your own pace. What lies before you is Maui's famous downhill expanse. You will drop 3,000' in 10 miles and curve around 29 switch backs!

Stop often and enjoy the incredible vistas of west Maui surrounded by the Pacific. Below 4,000' you come to "upcountry Maui". Vegetable farms, protea farms, lodges, galleries and Kula botanical gardens. You have the option of expanding your day and including Keokea, the Chinese community, Tedeschi Winery and the Enchanted Gardens. Further down the mountain is Makawao town- Paniolo (cowboy) country. Boutiques, shops, and wonderful places to eat where you can stop and enjoy a leisurely meal.

This tour is available 7 days a week and departs at 3:00 am (summer time) and 4:00 am (winter time) from Haiku Marketplace. This is a self-guided adventure. Most riders return back to the store around 10AM, but anytime before 4:30PM is fine.

Driving Directions

Thrifty Rent-A-Car System, Inc.
Go to the main airport in Kahului. As you approach the airport, you will be on Highway 380. About 1/2 mile before the airport, you intersect with Highway 36 (note: some maps say Highway 360). Right in front of the Big K-Mart make a right turn. Go approximately 10 miles; you should find yourself at the 11 mile marker. That is exactly 4 miles past Paia.

At the 11 mile marker, there is a sign for Haiku and a street sign for Haiku Road. Turn right on Haiku Road, go up toward the mountain for 1 1/2 miles. Haleakala Bike Company is located in downtown Haiku. Across the intersection to your left is an old cannery building. It has been made into a mall, Haiku Marketplace. Please meet inside at the Haleakala Bike Company.

Missed the sunrise but the bike ride was great fun

The bike ride that we went with clearly have the best launch site on the mountain (highest up of anyone) and some of the other companies start their rides as many as 5 kilometers further down the mountain. No matter what the weather is like at your resort, the best advice I can give is to take warm clothing onto the mountain. They give you a back pack so you can shed the clothes on your way down. The bike ride was lots of fun and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast half way down. The ride itself is very easy, being downhill 99% of the way. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

An amazing experience!! one I would certainly recommend. We were picked up and driven to the top of the volcano by a wonderful guide who was able to share lots of information with us. The actual sunrise was breathtaking and we were then taken to a second vantage point that no-one else went to, we got some amazing photos. Just make sure you rug up as it is freezing at the top
