The Sugar Cane Train
The Sugar Cane Train awaits! With a blast of its steam whistle, the old locomotive chugs up and down its narrow-gauge trail from Lahaina to Puukolii several times a day, recreating the old days when it hauled raw sugar cane all the way to Kaanapali for milling.
For more than 100 years, railroads traveled through Hawaii hauling sugar cane to the mills and transporting workers between their homes and the cane fields. Those sugar cane fields are gone now as are most of the old railways. All that's left is the Sugar Cane Train and its six-mile stretch of track. Now you can experience what it once felt like for islanders in the old days to travel those rails through paradise.
Relax in a nostalgic open-air coach and enjoy a leisurely ride through amazing landscapes. All along the way, you'll be entertained by your singing conductor, who will also point out interesting sights. One of the highlights of the tour is a 325-foot wooden trestle bridge. While crossing it, you'll enjoy fascinating views of the West Maui Mountains and the neighboring islands. If you do the tour in the winter, you might even spot humpback whales frolicking in the ocean. |
A little about the Sugar Cane Train's history: The first sugar cane train on Maui began operating around 1890. It used to haul tons of raw sugar cane to the mills until around 1950 when it was replaced by motorized trucks and mechanical claws. The train and its tracks sat dormant until 1969 when the sugarcane train had new life breathed into it. A.W. "Mac" McKelvy together with the Makai Corporation created the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad, better known as The Sugar Cane Train. It has been in operation for over 35 years now. Since 1970, over five million visitors to Maui have enjoyed the train ride, making it one of Maui's most popular attractions.
Note: You may use your Sugar Cane Train ticket for any departure locations and times you wish. All tickets are good for one round trip passage, except the 4:00pm (last) train leaving from Lahaina (one way to Puukolii). |

A gentle train ride on Maui
Reviewer: BIRCHBAYBILL (YUMA AZ, USA) December 8, 2006

For the modest price, this excursion was entertaining, educational and relaxing. Whoever wrote the m.r. review needs to get out more (we understand it was written 12 years ago) ... my 36 year old son and his wife loved it, as did our two year old grandson, who is obsessed with trains.
I gave this activity 5 stars because I couldn't think of anything to downgrade it for. We recommend it to anyone who might enjoy a gentle train ride! |
